Inheritance

At the reading of the will, the lawyer slid one page across the table and said the lake house was mine. My brother didn’t blink, my sister smiled too fast, and I realized Dad had planned for this fight long before his funeral casseroles got cold.

At the reading of my grandmother’s trust, my cousin slid a single page across the conference table and said it changed everything. Two hours later, the bank’s trust officer called me and asked why the page number didn’t exist.

I thought I was just the caretaker who made sure the pills got taken and the heat stayed on. Then the attorney read my name out loud, and every face in the room turned hard like I’d stolen something.

I thought the worst part would be the reading of the will. Then a woman I’d never seen walked into the lawyer’s office holding a photo of my father and two kids who looked like they belonged to him.

Two days before we buried Mom, I unlocked the front door and found bare walls, missing photos, and empty drawers. My brother said he was “helping,” but a yellow sticky note on the counter told me he’d been looking for something specific—and he thought he’d already won.
